Metalsubs challenge and Thal Technologies solution Developing a sturdy waterproof housing was no problem. However, there were some challenges in the field of heat development
In a groundbreaking collaboration between Raillighting, an emerging company stemming from the Lighting Division, and Thal Technologies, a specialist in thermal management and LED lighting, the Railpuck® has been developed.
Martijn Broekhuis, co-founder of Raillighting, expressed his enthusiasm about the new product during the interview. He explained that the collaboration with Thal Technologies was established based on previous experiences in developing lighting fixtures. The goal was to create a fixture that provides lighting in a safe and efficient manner at railway locations where traditional mast lighting falls short.
The Railpuck® is placed into the railway track and provides safe lighting at regular intervals of 3.5 meters. Special brackets clamp the fixtures underneath the track, ensuring they are sturdy and reliable. This particular product is the result of further development from an earlier concept, significantly improving in size, light output, and ease of transport. The new design is compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand while maintaining the same brightness and quality as the previous 2-meter long fixtures.
One of the invaluable contributions of Thal Technologies was in developing the circuit board and addressing voltage drop over longer distances. Thanks to their innovative solutions, one driver can now control up to 200 meters, effectively managing LEDs between 36 and 12 volts. The fixtures also feature redundant drivers, ensuring that even if one driver fails, the lighting remains operational. This enhances safety and reliability on the railway.
One of the exciting developments is the integration of a radar sensor into the Railpuck®. This sensor will soon be capable of controlling lighting based on motion, enabling energy savings. Unlike traditional PIR or other sensors, the radar sensor is robust, durable, and resistant to challenging conditions such as dirt, moisture, and heat. This makes the Railpuck® ideal for safety-critical railway environments.
The Railpuck® offers numerous benefits, including quick installation, a long lifespan of 100,000 hours, and easy interchangeability. Furthermore, the system minimizes light pollution, enhances safety, and provides a cost-effective lighting solution.
With already securing two major contracts and plans for further expansion into other countries, including Belgium, the Railpuck® has already made a significant impact on the market. This unique concept is patented globally and is recognized as the ideal lighting solution for both railways and commercial entities across various industries.
The Railpuck® is a revolutionary lighting solution that enhances safety along railways by illuminating the path without causing glare.
